A 26-year-old woman was allegedly killed over dowry here, police said on Monday.

According to the police, the victim's mother, Malawati Devi, lodged a complaint alleging that her daughter, Sitara Yadav, was married to Vikram alias Shravan, a resident of Ward No 10 in Chauk Nagar Panchayat, on December 2, 2022.

In the complaint, she alleged that after a few months of marriage, her daughter was subjected to mental and physical harassment by her husband and in-laws over repeated demands for cash as dowry.

She further alleged that Sitara was assaulted and driven out of the home on June 2 over the dowry issue.

A village panchayat was later held on June 11, following which a cooler and other household items were given in an attempt to resolve the dispute.

The complainant alleged that she received a phone call on Sunday morning informing her that her daughter was unwell.

When she reached her daughter's house along with family members, Sitara was found dead.

She accused the in-laws of murdering her daughter for dowry.

Chauk Station House Officer Manish Patel said an FIR has been registered against seven persons, including the victim's husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law and other family members, under relevant provisions of law based on the complaint.

Some of the accused have been detained for questioning, and further investigation is underway, he added.
